Dr. Liker takes executives through an overview of the Toyota Way and leads a collaborative learning experience to analyze where the company is and where the executives want to take it. Many companies have “lean” or “six sigma” programs and have concluded a specific technical program is not enough. They wish to go beyond this to develop a true learning culture from the top to the bottom of the company. This requires an honest and in-depth analysis of the company by senior executives of the current situation and a vision for where the company should be headed. Finally action plans at a high level need to be developed to move toward the future vision.
Dr. Liker has led Toyota Way executive retreats with companies such as Danfoss, Benteler Hertz, Automotive, Standard Chartered Bank, Caterpillar Asia Pacific, Vermeer, Severstal-auto (Russia), and DRB-Hicom (Malaysia), and PTC Structural.
Each event is customized ranging from 1-3 days.
Class Structure:
Sessions are with the executive team. This could mean the CEO and direct reports, Vice President of Operations and direct reports, and may extend to two levels down. Typical size of the team is 7 to 15 people. With a small group like this an intimate setting is preferred. In some cases this is on-site in a board room and in other cases off site. Some sessions have been done in combination with a tour of an exemplary lean plant of Toyota or a Toyota supplier or some other highly developed lean environment. The sessions are highly interactive and need to be carefully designed to achieve the desired outcomes.
Typical Schedules:
These sessions are customized for the client so there is no generic schedule. Some companies have a good deal of experience with some version of the Toyota Production System and do not want an overview of basic principles. Other companies are new to the journey and want some basic TPS training including hands-on simulations. Still others want to go offsite and build plant tours into the event.
Typical topics-activities :

- Processes - Eliminating waste through lean tools
- People - Developing and challenging exceptional people and partners
- Problem Solving - becoming a lean learning organization
Analysis of current state in relation to 4 Ps

Executive Retreat Leader:
Dr. Jeffrey Liker, author of The Toyota Way, personally leads the offsites. He must work closely with an internal leader of the lean effort. In some cases a supporting senior lean consultant co-leads with Dr. Liker. David Meier, Co-Author of The Toyota Way Field Book and Toyota Talent is available to co-led this retreat with Dr. Liker.
Cost:
With the wide range of designs and venues costs are variable.
